PUNCH recently co-hosted a tour for Cill Ronain Harbour, Inis Mor as part of the Thomond region of Engineers Ireland in conjunction with the West Region and the Civil division. The trip started with a site visit to the Doolin Marine Project currently under construction by Contractor L&K Keating Ltd. on which PUNCH are providing both Employers Representative and Resident Engineer services. Following a project overview by Resident Engineer David Leahy and LMK Project Manager Sean Killeen and short walkthrough, the party disembarked for the 45 minute trip to Inis Mór in good sea conditions.
On arrival at Cill Ronain harbour, the group met up with those who had travelled from Ros A Mhil port before a presentation by PUNCH Engineers Joe Murphy, David Leahy & Robert Tackaberry at the local co-op offices. The group listened intently as Joe spoke about the early years of the project before Robert explained the details associated with the design and tender stage of the works. David concluded with a review of the various construction techniques used by Contractor Bam on the project. Joe and Robert were Project Director and Project Manager respectively for the project with David fulfilling the role as Senior Resident Engineer on site.
A boat trip around the harbour provided an up close view of the completed breakwater, cargo quay, RNLI station and pier widening works. A further walkabout with a question and answer session concluded the events on Inis Mór for the day.
Refreshments on Inis Mor were provided by PJ & Grace at well-known local hostelry Joe Wattys.
On the return trip to Doolin, opportunity was taken the visit the pier at Inis Meain as well as a stop to Inisheer. A short detour to the mighty Cliffs of Moher was also taken and so concluded a most enjoyable day out.
