Construction has commenced on a new Format 35 Tesco superstore in Roscrea Co. Tipperary in which PUNCH Consulting is the Civil & Structural consultant. The new store is being developed by Tiernan Properties with SISK having been appointed as the main contractor. The store is due for completion in July 2011 and will replace the existing Tesco store in the town.
The 7200sq.m development includes 344 car park spaces the majority of which will be located in a semi basement under the suspended retail floor plate. The development also encompasses significant landscaping and civil works with the construction of a new town plaza in front of the store along with a new roundabout and access road off the Lourdes Road to serve the development.
The development is located in an historic part of Roscrea town. Although centrally located within the heritage town, the majority of the site has remained undeveloped for some 1400 years. The overall site encompasses 2 protected structures, The Black Mills and the Round Tower. Both of these iconic buildings have been sensitively integrated into the overall scheme. The proposed landscaping works around the new store which encompass a new public plaza will serve as new access routes for these historic buildings. Significant collaboration with the Office of Public Works took place throughout the planning stage to ensure that business and heritage interests were both satisfied.
