PUNCH has recently been appointed as Civil and Structural designers on the new Bernal project at the University of Limerick. The concept design for this proposed development is at an advanced stage and a planning application is due to be lodged with Limerick County Council in the autumn of 2012. The development will comprise well in excess of 6,000sq.m of highly serviced science and engineering research laboratories, offices, teaching and seminar rooms and associated ancillary accommodation. The development will also include a significant lecture theatre which will form a central architectural feature in the building.
The site for the proposed development is located in the University South Campus adjacent to other busy didactic buildings including the proposed extension to the Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI) which PUNCH is also currently working on. The overall scheme envisages pedestrian linkages between other nearby buildings and a central courtyard bounded by the new development. The client brief requires that the building will be certified to a high BREEAM rating. This challenging brief will necessitate the incorporation of materials and systems that maximise sustainability and energy conservation.
