The first PUNCH winner of the night was People’s Park Pavilion in Dun Laoghaire, which picked up the award for Best Commercial/Retail Project. The People’s Park is a Victorian park that first opened in 1890 as a shelter, later becoming tearooms. The purpose of this project was not just to restore the Victorian Pavilion and the Gate Lodge buildings within the park to their former grandeur, but to bring them into the 21st century through sensitive contemporary interventions.
The structures suffered damage due to subsidence which resulted from the park’s previous use as a quarry and therefore needed to be stabilised. The Pavilion was extended towards the south with a lightweight glass structure that provides a generous and sunny dining space. A new kitchen, bar and toilets were also added. The original metal staircases were used to reinstate access to the roof terrace, allowing for outdoor dining. The Gate Lodge was refurbished to provide a modern dwelling with a roof deck overlooking the park.
All aspects for this project were implemented through the PUNCH Conservation Department.
The second PUNCH winner was Roscommon County Council Headquarters, which picked up two awards: Best Public Building and Best Sustainable Building.
Completed in 2015, the new headquarters for Roscommon County Council is located in Roscommon town, beside the old courthouse and on the site of the old Gaol. The 6,700m2 development consists of new office accommodation, new council chambers and facilities for elected members. The design is for a modern concrete framed building which utilizes exposed concrete finishes both internally and externally, which requires a very high level of specification and workmanship.
The building achieved BREEAM Excellent Certification (BRE Environmental Assessment Method), which requires the adoption of all best practice sustainability principles and standards. Earlier this year, this project also picked up the award for Building Project of the Year at the Irish Building & Design Awards 2016.
These two projects not only highlight the hard work of PUNCH, they also demonstrate the diversity in the work that we do. Not only do we bring new structures to life, but we bring new life to existing structures.
