On 22nd April 2014 Clare County Council appointed civil engineering contractors L&M Keating for the construction of a new €5M pier 65m long alongside the existing pier at Doolin, Co Clare. PUNCH Consulting act as Employers Representative on the project.
The new pier is primarily required to allow passenger ferries to the Aran Islands to berth at all stages of the tide and this will help to free up the existing pier for recreational users. Siteworks are presently underway with temporary car parking and temporary road widening having been completed. The pier design maximises the use of precast concrete which will be produced in Banagher Concrete, based in Co Offaly. The seabed is rocky and levels are to be lowered by use of explosives and this is expected to commence in early June. Ancillary works include an approach road to the pier, access steps to the waterline for surfers and other recreational users of the water, and navigation aids for vessels. The works are programmed for completion in February 2015.
