PUNCH Consulting Engineers acted as the Civil and Structural Engineers for the development. The CNU is a steel frame building with metal deck flooring and a lightweight roof structure. Timber frame walls were used both internally and externally. Sustainable design was a key feature of the project incorporating natural ventilation, maximising site levels to minimise the import and export of fill and the maximising of off site construction. The drainage which was designed for future expansion loadings also included Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) with the installation of a permeable paving car park and stone based attenuation system.
PUNCH Consulting Engineers as part of a multi-disciplinary team led by Bam Building Ltd. was appointed by tender submission to design and build a 100-bed community nursing home unit (CNU). The CNU is located in the Phoenix Park in Dublin City Centre, situated in a walled garden to the rear of St. Mary’s Hospital. The unit was constructed as part of the Health Services Executive strategy of providing designated facilities to suit the needs of long stay and short stay elderly patients. The unit provides a range of services for elderly people and support for their carers in its catchment area including respite care, day care and extended nursing support.
This 100 Bed CNU was completed within 26 weeks. This was achieved by careful pre-planning to simplify details, maximise repetition and pre-fabrication, seal the building early and provide integrated details. It was not achieved by any one team member but by a combination of dedicated team players working towards a common goal. A second 50 bed unit of similar construction was also completed on the grounds of St. Mary’s by the same team; and opened in 2009.Back to Healthcare
