Project Description
This project involves the demolition of the existing 8-storey Beacon Hotel and the construction of a new extension to the adjacent Beacon Hospital, both of which were originally designed by PUNCH. It was not feasible to link the existing structures as the floor levels between them did not match above ground level – however, the basement levels have been retained.
The new 8-storey extension to the hospital, built upon the existing ground floor slab of the hotel, comprises over 5,700m2 of hospital accommodation consisting of 70 bed spaces, new accident and emergency facilities, radiology, oncology facilities and associated in-patient treatment rooms, and staff facilities. The new extension is linked to each level of the existing hospital.
The existing transfer slab over the basement has been re-engineered to accommodate the new structure using a lighter steel superstructure instead of the heavier concrete structure which formed the hotel building. Strengthening works are also being carried out to the transfer slab as appropriate. This re-use of the existing basement structure has significantly reduced the environmental impact, cost and programme of the project in addition to reducing the impact on the hospital and adjacent dwellings.
The demolition proposal required a significant engineering review of the structure to allow for the safe demolition of the existing hotel while maintaining the adjacent apartments and hospital structures.
Planning was granted by DLRCC in Jan 2022 and construction commenced in 2025.
