Project Description

This project involved the construction of a new extension to Bon Secours Hospital, Galway. The new extension provides Interventional Cardiology and Radiology facilities for the hospital and treats patients requiring procedures such as angiography and cardiac angioplasty including the insertion of pacemakers.

The new building consists of a single-storey extension with an enclosed plantroom at roof level, providing 790m2 of additional space. The project is located in an infill site between the original three-storey hospital building and the single-storey section (Radiology department) constructed in 2006.

As part of the initial enabling works, the existing underground services on the site were relocated or diverted to suit the construction of the new building. The works also included a new MV room in the existing service yard.

The foundations were designed as deep-fill concrete trenches with a suspended ground floor slab and beams which spanned over services. The superstructure was an in-situ concrete frame, with masonry infill walls.

The IC room required a structural steelwork frame under the concrete slab to provide support for the C-arms of the Cath machine which was designed by PUNCH to the requirements of Siemens.
