Project Description
This project is a a state-of-the-art new acute hospital in Towlerton, Ballysimon, Co. Limerick.
The new hospital comprises 11,610m2 of clinical departments and 4,482m2 of support departments.
The new hospital will see the provision of 4 operating theatres, a non-GA surgical unit, an Ophthalmology unit as part of the outpatients department, as well as urology, cardiology and respiratory departments. Key support departments include a pharmacy, laboratory, catering services in the form of a hospital kitchen, restaurant, and café, as well as an Oratory.
Site access requirements saw upgrades to entrances given the proximity of the hospital to an adjacent school. A dedicated entrance pick up point was provided for the collection of patients from the Discharge Lounge, as well as a single ambulance entrance point close to the Main Entrance of the new Hospital. Other Masterplan developments were considered in the design of the hospital’s location and access.
Designing for expansion and future flexibility was a key component of this project. For example, the HDU / Observation Unit is to be located adjacent to the medical ward in the context of weekend / night emergency cover and will be staffed initially as part of the medical ward cohort, however it was designed to facilitate use as a standalone unit in the future. The same principles were applied to the design of the Surgical Day Unit, Endoscopy Unit, and the Inpatient Wards.
As the project progresses, current projections indicate a future expansion requirement of approximately 5,700 sqm., likely to proceed in the period 2027-2030.
