Project Description

PUNCH Consulting Engineers was appointed by Dereen Quarries to provide input for a planning application for a sand and gravel quarry extension. PUNCH Consulting Engineers remit was to conduct a hydrological assessment, a drainage design, and drafting of all drawings to accompany the planning application.

12d Models ground models were used to estimate future yield of sand and gravel and generate a phased extraction process. This ground model was also used to provide estimates of ground levels once the quarry has reached its end of life. As part of the design of the quarry, PUNCH Consulting Engineer’s designed a system for recycling water used in the sand and gravel washing process. A series of settlement lagoons was designed to remove the suspended sediment from the wastewater used in the processing of the raw product. This water is then reused in the washing and screening process, which reduced the costs of water pumping. The settlement system ensured that the system is a closed water system and as a result, there will be no discharge of sediment laden water to surface waters. All excess water from the process is discharged to ground following treatment. A combination of a petrol separator and a soakaway was designed to provide for discharging runoff from the refuelling and bunded fuel storage areas.
