The scheme was constructed on a phased basis, commencing with the residential element and completed with the opening of the five star G Hotel. PUNCH was responsible for all Civil and Structural works for the project. The hotel forms part of a 33,000m2 multi-use development which includes over 100 residential units, substantial retail elements, and the EYE cinema. The EYE is amongst the most advanced cinemas in Ireland with almost 1,200 seats and 9 screens. There is also a 10,000m2 underground car park to serve the entire development. The hotel fit-out was one of the most significant elements of the job – such was the extent of the fit out that PUNCH was, unusually, required to provide structural input to this area.
Noted for its avant-garde design features, courtesy of internationally-renowned designer Philip Treacy, the 5-star G Hotel has become one of Ireland’s best known hotels. The hotel comprises 101 rooms, a spa, fine dining and meeting facilities. Each guest room in the hotel has a distinctive style – from the wallpaper, lighting and artwork to the furniture and flooring – and all have been inspired by the landscapes and seashores of County Galway.
The G Hotel was initially designed on the basis that the building was to be an office block, and construction commenced accordingly. The late change into a 5-star hotel during the construction period resulted in key challenges for PUNCH, the design team and the main contractor. However, the success of the project is reflected in the multiple awards that have been earned to date.
