Gallery Quay is a fine example of a modern precast concrete building. The basement level and the transfer slab at ground level were formed using traditional in-situ concrete, but everything above ground level was formed with precast concrete. The walls were formed with solid concrete panels, and the floors were hollowcore planks, tied with a screed. Pockets were left at strategic locations and filled with reinforcement and grout to allow the precast elements to be strongly bonded together.
Gallery Quay is located near Grand Canal Quay in Dublin City Centre. The development contains 300 no. 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, 1050m2 of retail space and 230 car parking spaces. The superstructure of the development consists of two separate 8-storey buildings surrounding a central courtyard. The client was Pierse Contracting, in a joint venture with Alanis Ltd working for the Dublin Docklands Authority.
The prefabricated construction PUNCH utilised on this project offered many advantages for the client. Most of the work was carried out in the controlled environment of a factory allowing a high level of quality control. Construction was very rapid once the system was brought to site resulting in significant advantages for the programme. In addition, the solid walls give excellent acoustic performance for residential applications such as this development at Gallery Quay.
