This major acute hospital was newly built for the HSE to provide a total of 30,000m² of new-build accommodation, including the provision of a total of 237 Beds (217 In-Patient and 20 Day Patient).

It was constructed on the campus of the original 1940’s hospital – a protected structure – on foot of a growing population demand for regional services in the surrounding Midlands catchment area.

The overall hospital campus now consists of a new glazed main entrance concourse, accident & emergency, general medical and surgical wards, coronary care unit, rehabilitation unit, maintenance department, ambulance building, at-grade car parking facilities and an energy centre. 

The main hospital structure consists of a three and four storey building, linked to the existing hospital at ground floor, and constructed of predominantly a reinforced concrete frame incorporating a waffle slab structure. The hospital roof structures, plant rooms and energy centre buildings are all constructed from light weight structural steel. The main building façade is a combination of reconstituted stone panels, render and planar glazing.

Our civil consultancy included a detailed integrated design of the watermain, surface and foul water drainage networks and associated roads and car parking. 

This project won the Best International Design Award at the Building Better Healthcare Awards in 2008 and The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland Regional (RIAI) Best Health Building Award in 2009
