Project Description

Construction of a new pier to facilitate ferry operations during all tides as the current pier has limited access during low tide. The contract was let as a Design & Build contract with L&M Keating Ltd as Main Contractor.

The pier design uses precast concrete with units being cast by specialist precasting subcontractor Banagher Concrete in Co. Offaly. Berth and navigation channel depths are being improved using drill and blast techniques to provide sufficient depth of water at spring tides to accommodate the variety of ferry and tourist vessels that will use the pier.

Concrete armour units are also incorporated into the works. 10 tonne XBlocs® were designed by specialists Delta Marine Consultants and were positioned onto the exposed face of the breakwater to protect the pier during heavy seas.

Ancillary works include an approach road to the pier, access steps to the waterline for surfers and other recreational users of the water, and navigation aids for vessels.
