This project involved refurbishing and repurposing the former An Post sorting office into a public library to create a vibrant community hub that includes accessible public restrooms, designed to foster a sense of well-being.
The building is a single-story structure with a flat concrete roof. The main library area features a higher ceiling with a glazed clerestory. The existing fabric and roof have been upgraded to achieve a BER B3 rating. Internal finishes have been repaired or replaced, with new walls and ceilings added. The interior now includes built-in joinery, desks, and seating tailored for library use. The kitchen and restroom facilities have been reconfigured and updated to meet current space and sanitary standards.
The entrance area has been landscaped, incorporating split levels with retaining walls and steps. A ramp surrounded by soft landscaping and trees has been integrated to ensure accessibility. The rear yard has been resurfaced with blacktop for durability.
PUNCH Consulting Engineers contributed significantly to this development by providing civil and structural engineering services. Our services included assessing the building frame’s condition and capacity, as well as designing new structural details to accommodate the new layout. External work involved designing an accessible ramp, retaining walls, and essential underground foul/surface water and watermain services.
