PUNCH provided Civil and Structural Engineering services for the development of a new ophthalmology casualty unit at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH). This development involved the conversion of existing administrative accommodation within a central part of the hospital building into 2 theatres and associated accommodations. The new casualty unit is in addition to a new Outpatient Department, which has also been developed on a standalone site adjoining the existing hospital.
Servicing the new theatre accommodation within the confines of an existing and congested hospital campus presented a number of significant challenges which had to be overcome as part of the project scope. The project scope also included significant extensions to existing plant platforms on the existing building roof. The fitout of the theatre accommodation also required significant structural inputs. The pendants within the theatres required dedicated structural support frames, which were fixed to the concrete structure only, rather than suspended from the lightweight roof over in order to satisfy the vibrational requirements of the pendants.
