PUNCH Consulting Engineers was engaged by Westmeath County Council to provide a consulting engineer-led Design Team to assess, design and oversee the repair of Ballycorkey Bridge, in Co. Westmeath. This single-span masonry arch bridge crosses the River Inny and has significant retaining walls on approach.
The bridge is a Recorded Monument and Protected Structure with high archaeological potential dating back to the late medieval or early modern period.
PUNCH’s assessment revealed severe decay in the retaining walls, including loss of core rubble and mortar, as well as partial wall collapse.
Primary repairs included new masonry buttresses, full structure repointing with low pressure lime mortar injection grouting, new mountable rubbing strips as well as carriageway resurfacing and formalised surface drainage with swales at both ends of the bridge.
