Tallaght Public Realm

The Tallaght Public Realm project focuses on revitalising public open spaces extending from the southern area of the South Dublin County Council offices at Chamber Square, across Belgard Square North, and leading to a new pedestrian access route to the newly developed Innovation Square.

The outdoor spaces are linked to the newly constructed Innovation Building and an extension to Cookstown Road. The design, by DFLA, incorporates various pavement finishes, including impervious asphalt, high-quality pavers, porous asphalt, and exposed aggregate concrete.

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) measures are integrated into the design, using porous asphalt for surface water filtration and bioretention areas to enhance biodiversity and community amenities. An uncontrolled pedestrian crossing at Belgard Square North was constructed with a raised table along a bus route, interfacing with both a cycle lane and a cycle track, as well as the existing pedestrian footpath and the proposed public realm.

An external area at the Mobility Hub connects with the existing LUAS stop and accommodates the future development of a Busconnects space. The project links to the South Dublin County Council car park, providing disabled parking and drop-off areas along a modified one-way exit route, featuring a localised raised table interface at the car park’s office entrance.

The project features a blend of precast concrete and steel for its external elements, along with a specialised playground structure. Surface water drainage is managed in the external areas with a series of four attenuation tanks, ensuring effective surface water control for various sections.
