Project Description
This project was an integral part of the flagship route for the Limerick Smarter Travel Project, which aimed to connect four major hubs in Limerick City and its suburbs through the development and promotion of sustainable transport options.
The canal bank improvements included creating a pedestrian and cycling zone along the banks of the Park Canal. As part of the project, we:
- Established a new shared surface along the canal banks, complete with speed tables, road signage, and road markings
- Installed pedestrian-controlled traffic signals and related signage
- Implemented traffic management measures and created shared transport zones
- Conducted local drainage works
- The Towpath section, which spanned 4 kilometres, served as a walk and cycleway linking Limerick city centre to the University of Limerick
This walkway runs along a picturesque stretch of the River Shannon and the historic canal. It features the old Limerick Navigation scheme, a vital commercial waterway that connects Limerick port to Lough Derg for nearly 150 years.
Significant renovations were made to the old archway bridges, some of which were widened, and a new asphalt surface was laid throughout the entire route.
