Project Description
PUNCH Consulting Engineers was appointed by Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) to create an updated and revised Sustainable Transport Management Strategy and Implementation Plan for the DkIT campus. Currently, DkIT has around 6,000 enrolled students and employs 570 staff members.
The Strategy and Implementation Plan developed by PUNCH comprised an analysis of the current situation along with an evaluation of future needs related to local and town planning, campus development forecasts, national and regional transport strategies, and obligations under the National Climate Action Plan. It included a travel survey for staff and students to gain insights into current travel behaviours and traffic patterns on the campus. Additionally, a car parking utilisation survey was conducted to assess typical usage of the parking facilities, and a cycle parking survey was done to evaluate the demand for cycle parking.
The plan also examined potential future campus developments, and the anticipated trip generation and transport requirements linked to these changes. A review of the existing campus road network, junctions, and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists was carried out to identify areas for improvement. A timeline for implementing the strategy along with a mobility management monitoring plan was established.
